This eight-bed House provides a serene home-like environment for Hospice patients who are unable to remain at home. St. John Baptist/Hospice Buffalo House is here to help.
*This residence is the first Hospice House developed jointly by a church and a hospice program.
The St. John Baptist/Hospice Buffalo House is a new setting for hospice care that traditionally has been provided in the home. The Hospice House provides the same compassionate and professional care that has been the hallmark of hospice since it began more than 30 years ago. Hospice care is focused on providing comfort and dignity to any person who has a life-limiting illness with months rather than years of life expectancy.
The 10,000 square foot Hospice House is a unique home-like setting. The House has 8 spacious private rooms. There is a kitchen with dining area where family members may cook special meals and dine together, and a family lounge.
Who provides care at the Hospice House?
Nurses and nurses aides provide around-the-clock care to Hospice House residents. A hospice physician oversees each resident’s medical care. The Hospice Home Care team which consists of a registered nurse, medical social worker, pastoral care chaplain, trained volunteers, bereavement counselors and consultant therapists is also available on-call to assist with specific resident needs at the Hospice House.
What are the admission requirements for the Hospice House?
Any Hospice eligible patient who is in need of 24-hour nursing care during the final months or weeks of life is eligible for admission. Admission is based on bed availability.
Hospice House admission is appropriate when: • A patient lives alone and is no longer able to feed or dress him or herself • A patient’s caregiver is unable to provide care at home • Patient lives in an unstable or unsafe home • Patient does not have adequate family support • A patient wishes to relocate from outside of Erie County to be closer to family members
The patient and family, along with the patient’s physician and Hospice Buffalo’s medical director and staff, work together to decide if the St. John Baptist/Hospice Buffalo House is appropriate for an individual. Hospice House accepts patients regardless of race, color, disability, gender, or creed.
What is offered at the Hospice House? • Excellent bedside nursing • 24-hour staffing • 8 comfortable, private rooms, each with its own bathroom, telephone, and sofa chair • Access to Hospice Buffalo’s staff physicians • Full range of hospice personnel on call, including bereavement counselors, pastoral care chaplains,
and trained volunteers • Two guest rooms for brief overnight stays • A family lounge complete with TV/VCR/DVD and library • Dining room and meal service • Housekeeping
What payment options are available for St. John Baptist/Hospice House care? • Medicaid • Private Pay • Check with your insurance provider for possible coverage
Medicare Hospice Benefit will cover for hospice services, but not room and board. St. John Baptist/Hospice Buffalo House patients are billed room and board fees that insurance does not cover.
Where does Hospice take care of patients?
Most people receive hospice care in their home. Symptoms are managed so that people can live a full life with the support of family and friends.
